7 Questions for Nina

Nina-at-Work
What makes a great wedding designer?

It starts by listening. Helping clients determine their style and budget. I think that a great designer should make relevant suggestions based on professional experience. Every customer is unique. Every event is different. There are lots of variables… from the weather to the venue. In addition to being dependable and accessible, I think it’s about being respectful of budgets and ideas… it should always be a collaboration of ideas.

How long have you been a designer?

I’ve been designing with By Request since 2010. Prior to that, I did a lot of freelance design jobs, from weddings & special events to corporate & community functions. Professionally, it has been about 20 years. Admittedly, I’ve always been the “creative friend” who volunteers to handle all party planning and decorations.

How did you get started in the wedding & event industry?

It’s my husband Jeremy’s fault (laughs). We started as a DJ company.  As our business grew, we expanded. Floral, design and coordination were obvious complements to our DJ service. Plus, word spread that we’re really good at what we do!  In June of 2020 we decided to shut down the DJ department and focus solely on the floral & decor services.

What did you do before By Request?

I owned & operated “The Silver Seahorse” in Morro Bay for 20 years… it was a children’s clothing boutique. I loved it all, but I mostly enjoyed creating fun window displays & merchandising.

What do you enjoy most about your work now?

Weddings are such an important, personal, meaningful day… and I love setting the stage for a beautiful and successful event. When I’m hired as the Event Director, I really enjoy guiding our clients through the wedding day maze. It’s very rewarding. My goal is to maximize the experience… to deliver more than a client expects… to help create lifetime memories. That’s the best.

What is your best advice for clients?

Repurpose! A great way to stretch your floral budget is to reuse the ceremony floral arrangements. For example, move the arbor arrangements to the bar or to a gift table. We intentionally design these arrangements for quick and easy relocation. It’s a really smart way to get more “bang for your buck”.

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy watching TV crime shows and attending live music events. I love good Mexican food and a challenging puzzle. Spending quality time with my family & friends… and snuggling with my dogs.
